One thing I have learnt from the past in submitting blogs and that is to have your web address. So I have now bought own web address and I will add my music blogs there. You don’t have to have your own site, but I would have more control in how it looks than using a third party, so when you are pitching your music to bloggers they might take you more seriously – I hope. Hi I have tried all the online music stores and socalled music adds like cd baby itune and so on and i have not been able to sell a things yet I have four songs in itune and i cannot even find them so how can you sell something you can’t find. cd baby was sapose to put them on itune and still i cannot find them i have the same four songs on song case and some others as well and have not any responds from them either i have come to bellieve it’s all BS and the only way to sell your music is to get out there and do cd shows and prmote it yourself. every where I have played my songs they are well liked so i know they will sell but to find the right person to sell them is not easy and as for on line services to help is just BS sorry to disapoint any one but best to know the truth then to loose your songs as I did.

Solid interview with Tech. I discovered him about 5 years ago while a student at Michigan. I have to say as a rapper and poet, he really appealed in both content and delivery. What was biting about some of his content was that his consciousness was not limited to local issues but cut across historical, international and cultural.

Thats why when i was working on some of my new mixtape material, i took the liberty of using the instrumental of 2 of his songs from Rev Vol 1 (Harlem Streets and Ind Revolution) more as a way to pay homage to how much he has inspired me.

Actually the least you can do to make your music known is to do some marketing. Selling your music and even you as a product is what works in the end, no matter the medium, and that’s why I believe some of the comments seemingly oppossed are just faces of the same coin.

You cannot have too much publicity, be it word of mouth or social media ‘bursts’.

I couldn’t agree more, Peter – but in order to know who to network with, you need to decide who you wish to target. And that’s my same comment on the overall blog – yes, there are lots of opportunities. But if you try to hit all of them, you’ll probably ending up missing most. If, on the other hand, you choose your niche market – and design your activities as well as your website to connect with those people. You will probably have greater success.

Just found your article from a link on twitter. I am composer also in the NY area. I find one of the strangest things is musicians always go out and try to network with their competition. It never made sense to me why a musician would go to a venue where they’re 100 or more other hungry musicians handing out demos, then wonder why they end up all in the trash.

When doing your own promotion (which I dislike)it’s unrealistic
to personalize your email other than taking the time to address it to the individual (To: John Jones, Folk Record Company / Hi John:)and then the body of your letter getting right to the point with description, genre, free download links, website, and asking if they would like a copy of the CD after taking time to listen to to a track or two first from a airplay direct for instance. Is this so much to ask?. Mailing out a thousand CDs “cold” is just crazy especially in today’s economy. This is for the independent songwriter who can’t afford to do this without just doing it themselves selectively. I notice Matt Brown’s site is stricly a commercial site asking for money up front. I shouldn’t have to pay anyone to have my CD heard. Paying to have that done is just plain wrong in this business.

I think it is great that Pepper & Law Records are giving their fans the opportunity to remix the bad ass jam “wake Up!” These guys really know the value of a fan base and are doing a great job keeping their fans involved. @Enigmafon Records – It’s not because of the Twitter, blogs and Facebook. That is an extension of his brand and an outreach channel.

These mediums are just a tool that can be used to assemble and communicate with your fanbase. It takes some hard ass work to make them work.

How are you driving traffic, who are you making deals with, who are you networking with and leveraging. Rhymefest leveraged a lot. He is a hard ass worker, that is why he is successful.

As for the thousands of musicians – they need to work harder.

Interesting article, but to suggest that Rhymefest’s success is due to his internet efforts is totally erroneous.
Rhymefest is not well know because of facebook or twitter.. he is well known because of his association with Kanye West and all the TV appearances he’s made
To imply that *any* artist is going to have the same success as Rhymefest just by creating some music, a blog, using bandcamp, twitter and facebook is just disingenuous.

There are thousands of musicians and bands with music, blogs, facebook and twitter pages and videos, and many are virtually unknown.

An interesting article with some valid points, but the process you describe is long and laborious. In terms of finding the blogs in the first place and then communicating with each one individually.

This might be OK if you are an artists who is releasing on a sporadic basis, but if you are a small independent label with a lot of output it becomes a difficult and time consuming process.

I like Music Xrays concept of a site/directory of bloggers and podcasters who are looking for new music, but have yet to find one that’s worthwhile.

And certainly think the pay for play/submission concept is a complete rip off.
